Reading instruction and practice come in many forms. Balanced Literacy consists of many components. Each is essential for helping children to develop the strategies and skills they will need to become independent readers. Your 1st grader will regularly participate in....
Read Aloud- teacher reads to the students with chapter stories, picture books. beyond students' independent levels. This models phrasing and fluency while introducing vocabulary and exposing students to a variety of genres and writing styles.
Shared Reading-students and teacher read together. (big books, morning message, poetry...)
Partner Reading-students read together (book bags/boxes, poetry folders, Scholastic News....) and talk about what they're reading.
Independent Reading-students read on their own with books that are "Just Right". Rereading these books helps students develop fluency.
Guided reading -students with similar skills and needs work with the teacher in small groups. Guided reading sessions include targeted word work (phonics), sight word practice, and decoding/comprehension strategies instruction and practice. (Small Group Reading Instruction, leveled texts)
Readers' Theater- students practice fluency and expression (scripted text)
