Standards for 1st grade narrative writing...
Introduces the story. Recounts 2 or more connected events. Includes details about what happened. Uses words to signal event order. Provides closure. |
Example of 1st grade narrative writing:
In the summer I went to a farm. I saw big, spotted cows. Then I fed the goats. They tried to grab the food! After that we went on a hayride. It was slow and bumpy. I love going to the farm. |
Weekend News
- One of the main ways that we provide regular practice with narrative writing is thorough Weekend News journals. Kids often have lots to share when we come back together on Monday. We start by thinking of all the things we did over the weekend. Then we choose just ONE TOPIC that we have a lot to say about. We often talk with a friend, as talking helps to generate ideas and organize our words orally before we write. Our partner may ask us questions that give us more ideas about what to include in our story.
