Planting and watching things grow helps first graders understand how...
plants and animals have systems (parts) and functions (behaviors) that help them survive.
Plants have roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits that are used to take in water, air, and other nutrients, and produce food for the plant.

Woodland Animal Research
One of the 1st grade writing standards is to participate in a shared research and writing project. 1st graders study woodland animals. We start by doing a class modeled/shared writing and research on an animal. Then partners or small groups choose one animal to read, gather facts and write about. We have wonderful non-fiction books and we do some research online, too.

After lunch, first graders have a short period of "Quiet Time". This helps to support a transition from the noisy playground and cafeteria to a quiet classroom. It helps kids relax and reset for the afternoon. Sometimes kids use the time to catch up on unfinished work. Other times kids preview upcoming lessons with the teacher. Most often, kids participate in D.E.A.R. time. This is where they get to relax and enjoy books from browse boxes. During instructional reading time, kids are limited to "just right books" that they can read independently. During DEAR time, kids can self-select books that they find interesting and engaging. These books might be too easy, but fun to reread, or too challenging right now, but interesting to look at and tell the story with the pictures. It's been a Fales tradition to invite families to join us for 30 minutes of DEAR time on the Friday before April vacation. Adults bring their own book to read alongside students and model the joy of reading. We hope you can join us!
